The leopard tortoise is a big beautiful tortoise and is the fourth largest in the tortoise family. These animals are very shy when they are not familiar with their surroundings and they tend to withdraw into their shell when they sense any form of disturbance or danger. The have and average length of 30-70 cm and weight of about 15-54kg with a top speed of 0.5 km/hour.

Diet and nutrition of leopard tortoise

They are strictly herbivores(folivores), These animals will eat grass, but prefer to graze on succulents, flowers, fungi, berries and a wide range of fruits. They will sometimes eat ash or old bones, possibly to top up their calcium levels. Avoid feeding your tortoise with leafy greens that are high in oxalates such as beet greens, swiss chard and spinach. Never feed dog food, cat food or any other animal proteins to your leopard tortoise, these foods can damage the tortoise’s kidney.

Behavior and temperament

Like other tortoises, they are generally very slow, quiet and non aggressive. They are generally good natured animals and not the most exciting pets. While a larger tortoise may mistake a finger for food, nleopard tortoise are generally known as the non biting type.
